I have been designing a game about a father and daughter driving from London to Scotland during an Alien invasion. The gameplay involves story driven decision making and inventory management, think the Oregon Trail meets War of the Worlds.
Here is a video and some very early screenshots to give an idea of what I have been making in Unity and what the game currently looks like.
Below is an early moment in the game when the characters are leaving London.
Characters:
Anton: The father of Mia, he is loosely based on the main Character from the Bergmen film 'The Seventh Seal' called Antonius Block. In the Seventh Seal, Antonius is a knight trying to find meaning in life and death, having returned from the crusades somewhat jaded and cynical. Antonius becomes unwilling agnostic in that he desperately wants to believe in God but can’t bring himself to without empirical proof, which is something he is constantly searching for. In my Game, the father ‘Anton’ is driving his daughter up to Scotland so she can see her mother (his ex) before she begins university. Anton, like Antonius, is experiencing an existential crisis. His daughter will be going to university at the end of the summer, leaving him alone and without anything to believe in. The Alien invasion that takes place in the game represent a lot of things but for Anton it represents both his own creeping anxiety but also the idea of there being something more to life, something that could give him purpose.
Mia: She is also named after a character from the Seventh Seal (all the main characters in the game are). As previously explained, she’s Anton’s daughter and she is going to university at the end of the summer. She is therefore, somewhat naive and untested but she is also smart, witty and has understood some of life's complexity from seeing her parents separate. At the start of the game Mia isn’t particularly concerned with great metaphysical questions, however, at such a formative age, the journey in this game affects her greatly.
